The other night at work, as it happened to be the night before Thanksgiving, and I was bummed about having to sleep through the festivities the next day, Ben decided to stop in with some pizza for all of us nurses.
I couldn’t have asked for a better pick-me-up to my night. Something about the anticipation of freshly-baked pizza, warm and gooey cheese, and tangy pepperoni and tomato sauce just made the night ahead that much bearable.
The pizza arrived around 10 pm, and after finishing up assessing my patient following her epidural, I decided to just take a nibble of some pizza. My patient was a second-time mom, nice and comfy from her epidural, and already dilated to six, so I knew she could basically deliver at any moment.
So….I nibbled….and nibbled some more….and a bit more.
Three pieces of pizza later, I walked back out to the nurses’ station, trying nonchalantly to suck in my stomach. I stuck my hands in my pockets in an effort to remain cool and casual.
And instantly, I heard it.
Both pocket seams literally burst, leaving me with two perfectly round holes on each side of my bowl full of jelly belly.
A tad bit embarrassing, although I’m not sure which was more embarrassing, the fact that I literally busted out of my top, or the giant “ahhhhh” I let out in pure relief of being able to breathe again.
So, my question to all of you–when did you sport your first baby bump? At barely 9 weeks, I am already showing, although clearly, my bump is augmented by an occasional doze of greasy pizza. I felt the exact same way with Mya–it just felt like my body instantly lost all control of any remaining abdominal muscles and said “to the hell with it.”
It’s quite mortifying.
Especially, because, in my case, I look about six months along, because I had the unfortunate luck to never lose any weight from my second, leaving a heaping pile of jiggly fat on top of the new baby bump, all resulting in a very attractive “double” bump.
Please, please, tell me I’m not alone here? Did any of you second (and beyond) time moms show early??
