Whenever I try to be the “fun mom,” you know the mom that takes her kids on adventures, the one who greets them with a Mary Poppins voice, the one who plans games and activities and most definitely plans on ice cream, precisely two things happen:
- My kids don’t cooperate at all. Like, they turn into whining, crabby, awful little messes and make me want to yell, DO YOU NOT SEE I AM TRYING TO BE THE FUN MOM HERE??
- Someone gets sick.
I mean, really, how rude can you be children? My little theory was proven true this past weekend, when I once again tried to be “fun mom” and took my kids on a little road trip to visit their uncle while Ben was out on a camping expedition with his brothers and dad.
I brought along my mom with me because I’m not a total glutton for punishment and everything went pretty well and we had fun and I was only exhausted to about a 9.8 on a scale of 1-10 by the time we got back and was feeling pretty good and proud of myself and even rounded the troops to hit up church, breakfast, and grocery shopping by myself (and yes, I realize some moms do this all the time and congrats to you because I obviously fail real hard, see photo for evidence). By the time I got groceries put away and was just about to collapse on the couch with Sara, I realized that she was not cutely snuggling with me because she loves me so much and I’m the best mother in the world. Nope, she was snuggling with me because she was burning up with a fever of epic proportions.
Sigh.
Once again, my efforts to be “fun mom,” thwarted by my ungrateful children, who insist on picking up strange viruses at the super clean hotel we stayed at.
Morale of the story? It’s OK to not be the fun mom and everyone will probably be better off for it, including children who try to be good sports when you try to take a selfie in the parking lot before you realize they are staring directly into the sun’s rays and you probably burned their retinas off. Oops.
Also side note: This guy is awful at driving + recording, but if you need a good laugh/distraction from your offspring, go watch this Instagram account. So funny.
Also also side note: I’ve hired some help behind the scenes (haaayyyy Danielle, more about her to come) and I’m aiming to get back into regular blogging, sending out newsletters, and all that good stuff, so I’d love to hear from you! What would you like to see more of here? I feel like I miss real blogs these days, no one seems to write them anymore…
[…] days it feels like I’m the only mom out there who honest-to-goodness has no energy for all the fun things in life. There are a few popular blogger and vloggers I follow that always seem to have energy for things I […]
