So I’m not sure if there’s anything better than your own personal hair stylist coming to your house on a Saturday afternoon to not only cut and highlight your hair, your husband’s hair, and both of your daughter’s hair (you can not bring yourself to cut your baby boy’s adorable locks just yet).
Unless, of course, that personal hair stylist brings muffins.
A few weeks ago, I enjoyed just that when my old school chum Joanna (you may remember her from her cake decorating tutorial!) stopped by for an Easter hair extravaganza. Joanna just launched her own professional hair and make-up business, Mystyle by Joanna–with three kiddos in tow, Joanna enjoys the flexibility of bringing her work home–or to yours!
Joanna is also the the most stylish and gorgeous person you will ever meet, so here’s a little warning to you, just in case you weren’t expecting that. Oh, and she also homeschools her oldest and she and her husband are exploring foster care. So she’s a supermom with a heart of gold, too.
And did I mention she brought me muffins?
Along the way, I asked Joanna for a few hair styling tips, since I obviously have no hair skills. When a mom of three breezes into your kitchen with perfect hair and skinny jeans, you figure she knows a thing or two.
Joanna’s Hair Styling Tips:
*Product matters. I admit it, I’m a 99 cents Suave shampoo kind of girl. I’ve tried pretty much every fancy shampoo that promises to boost volume and turn me into Eva Longoria, but so far, no luck. Joanna swears that a quality shampoo does make a difference, however. She recommended Matrix products and used a sample on me. The Easter Bunny left me a bottle of Matrix Volume shampoo, which I hear cost him about $10 at the grocery store. I’ve used it twice to date (can’t waste it now!) and I notice I can use a lot less and go longer without shampooing. So far, so good! She also recommends using Moroccan Oil and toning shampoos to hold color.
*Blow-dry hair up, not down. When I do blow-dry my hair, a rare feat indeed, I usually blow-dry it with the dryer pointing down so I don’t get all kinds of crazy flyaways. I noticed Joanna pointed the dryer up, however, so I asked her about it. Turns out, she said it helps the “hair to lay smoother” and gives you a little more oomph.
*Don’t wash your hair every day. I really, really struggle with this one. I feel like my hair gets super greasy after a day, but Joanna swears that washing it every other day, or even going longer between washes, if you can, makes your hair healthier and keeps color longer.
*If your hair won’t hold a curl… when you curl your hair, start from the top and work your way down for a better hold. Also try thinning your hair at the crown or adding layers. “Lightening it up helps the style from being dragged down,” says Joanna.
*Mix up your conditioners. Joanna recommends using a deep conditioner for damage control about once a week and a lighter, everyday conditioner the rest of the time. Again, I’m guessing Suave probably won’t cut it, huh?
Ok, so now for the big reveal. It’s incredibly difficult/awkward for me to try to take pictures of myself, so I had to resort to the computer, my apologies for the less-than-quality pics.
Without further ado, I give you…
Less frightening Chaunie! With highlights!
And a pinnable collage of less frightening Chaunie for all of Joanna’s tips!
For all of my local friends, Joanna is available by appointment to come right to your house. Haircuts start at $15, color at $30, and waxing at $10.
Again, she comes right to your house, people, and you can’t beat those prices. She did a terrific job on all of our hair–my husband said she gave him the best haircut he’s ever received, and I have to agree. Email her at email@example.com and be sure to check out her Facebook page so you can get updates when she’ll be in your area!
She also makes cakes too! (Again, with the supermom stuff. Enough already, ok, Joanna? 😉 ) And considering that Mya has requested a Dora cake for her birthday and Ada a “rockstar cowgirl” cake, I may be calling on her services soon!
Thanks for the haircuts, Joanna!
Oh, and the muffins.
We can’t forget the muffins.
