Yesterday, I hit 20 weeks. I’ve been a little anxious with this pregnancy, after working in labor and delivery and being close to a few people who miscarried, so I was really relieved to hit this milestone and know that everything was going smoothly.
The other exciting part, was of course, the ultrasound! I love that my doctor (a mom of 5 kids herself!) allows the whole fam to part of the big moment;we piled the kids into the room and they sat, riveted by the picture of the baby on the screen.
In between Mya’s requests to hold the baby and Ada’s outbursts of name suggestions, we were thrilled by all the bits and pieces that the technician pointed out to us.
And then, came the big moment.
She hovered between the legs and paused.
“You’re sure you want to find out, right?” she asked.
Ben and I exchanged a look. After being surprised with both the girls, Ben was adamant he wanted to know what this baby was. Until that morning, I was still undecided. I had loved the first moment I met my daughters; the surprise and recognition when I realized who they were and that they were wholly and completely mine. I worried that finding out the gender would somehow make the moment a little less exciting.
But that morning, I decided to go for it. I decided it would be fun, for #3 to find out. To know if I could buy a little man outfit or sort through the mountain of girls’ clothes in the basement. To get excited about doing this whole baby thing one more time, when it feels like my baby is still my baby.
“Yes, we’re sure,” I said firmly.
And then, we saw…
Yes, folks, you heard it here first.
That is a penis.
It’s a boy!!
She announced our little man, and then we all had a good laugh when Ada shouted “I told you!!”
She knew she was having a baby brother. Not a doubt in her mind. We are still not sure, however, of her name suggestions. She insists his name will be “Baby Zach.” (That’s all one word, for those of you unfamiliar with Ada-speak.)
And as for Mya?
She offered up a classic standby–“George.”
Oh, baby boy. I hope you are ready for life with these two. You’re in for a lot of fun. And nail polish, screaming contests, and princess parties.
