That night, looking at the two tiny blue lines of my positive pregnancy test, I found out I was going to be a mom.
I didn’t dance around the kitchen for joy with my husband, I didn’t cook an entire meal made out of baby vegetables as I had once planned, I didn’t started dreaming about nursery colors.
Instead, I sat in my bedroom alone and cried.
I was twenty-one, unmarried, a college student living in a run-down apartment and still taking my laundry home to my parents every weekend.
Fast forward a few years….
Today, my unplanned pregnancy started me on a journey towards the life I always dreamed about having–as a wife, a labor and delivery nurse-turned-freelance writer, editor, advocate and speaker for young women facing unplanned pregnancies, and most of all–mom to three amazing daughters and one adorable little man. And I wrote the book on young motherhood. Check it out here and if you are a young mom or had an unplanned pregnancy, please share your story with me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I love being a mom. I love being a “young” mom. I love my life, even if my hair is always flat, my husband can cook better than me, and I can never seem to lose the baby weight (perhaps because I keep having babies…).

As a national speaker on empowering young mothers, Chaunie travels the country talking about her experience having an unplanned pregnancy during her senior year of college and working to change her campus in support of better pregnant and parenting resources. As the former College Outreach Program Coordinator with Feminists for Life, Chaunie has helped to lead hundreds of students across the nation transform their campuses with woman and parent-centered solutions. She has spoken on Capitol Hill and at top universities and schools around the nation and in 2007 was awarded the National Association of Pro-Life Nurses Award.
Chaunie’s lecture touches on the importance of providing resources and support to young women in their twenties, the highest recipients of abortion in any age group and she offers two different versions:
For Colleges & Universities: Pregnant On Campus
An in-depth and interactive lecture that takes students through a pregnant student’s walk through campus, from the positive pregnancy test to combining diaper bags and study groups. Find out if your campus has what it takes to support pregnant and parenting students.
For Pro-Life Groups & Religious Organizations: The College-Aged Mother & Abortion
This lecture focuses on the importance of targeting the group of women receiving the highest number of abortions–college-aged women. The typical recipient of abortion has some college education, some means of financial support, and usually is already a mother. So why are they choosing abortion? The lecture will look at the discoveries that Chaunie made, from a pro-life student leader to a young woman facing unplanned pregnancy and seeing firsthand, how abortion can seem like the best option.
